Hayman Declassified School Survival Guide

Hayman Declassified School Survival Guide

Dear Incoming Student,
The things a first semester freshmen needs to know about college writing are one, that the class is a two semester class. I did not realize this until I was making my schedule at the end of first semester. So that’s just a heads up. College Writing is fairly easy if you follow the directions and participate in class. All of the activities are designed to eventually be helpful for your essay at the end. Also participating in class activities is important because some of the work we do in class ends up being passed in as part of a portfolio that gets graded. Next always do your homework. The homework is really what drives home the concepts Casey is trying to teach us. Some of it will be boring but most of it is pretty relevant and interesting articles. Casey chooses topics that most college students like, so writing the papers is not bad. This writing class does not require much reading slow make sure to read all of the articles assigned. These articles are very important for participation in class so make sure to just power through and read everything. The topics of the class are mostly centered around sports. I am not sure if that was just this semester or if it is always like that, but definitely expect to be writing about sports. For example, I wrote two essays about fighting in hockey. Another thing to expect during the first semester of College Writing is to be doing a lot of peer review. We peer reviewed multiple times every essay which was challenging. Peer review is not usually everyone’s favorite, but you do get out what you put into it. If you really focus peer review can massively improve an essay and raise your grade.

It makes sense for me to address the incoming students in an informal way. I wrote this letter like I was having a face to face conversation with an incoming College Writing student. This is the most effective way to write a letter that is giving your own personal opinion and anecdotes about the class.
