The
Legend of English 113
Dear
Freshman,
As you enter your four or more
wonderful years in college, you will take a class called college writing. To
some of you this might be the end of the world as you think about all those
essays and writings assignments you are asked to do. To others it may be just
another class where you show up and do what you need to do to pass. Then there
is the last group of people who can’t wait to take this course and who love to
write. Whatever category you fall into I promise you it will be okay and you
will make it. The class will not be the end of the world for you and if you put
time and effort into your work, you’re experience in this class will be a good
one. I am hoping with this letter to you that, I can help you get through your
first semester of college writing and college in general.
The first topic I want to talk to
you about is time management. This goes for your college writing class and all
your other classes as well. Use your free time wisely because now you are on
your own to do your work. You must be responsible and get work done when you can.
There will be a lot more free time for you to do work than you had in high
school and it will be really easy for you to put it off and just take a nap
instead. You will be surprised how fast work piles up and how quickly teachers
can load work on to you. SO, GET AHEAD! Procrastination is the worst thing you
can do. If you wait until the last second to do an essay or an assignment it
will just cause more stress to you and your day. Why not just avoid that stress
and get it done earlier? Stay on top of your work and stay organized are
important to being successful in college. Next I want to talk to you
specifically about college writing. It is a requirement here at Springfield
College and that is why you are in the class even if it doesn’t apply to your
major. It’s up to you to take what you want from the class though. In my
specific college writing class with Casey Hayman, we did multiple types of
essays. We learned how to do an annotated bibliography and different styles of
writing. He taught us that an essay can have multiple approaches to it, based
on the audience. The tone of the essay can be determined by this audience. You
can learn some very valuable writing techniques and lessons through college
writing so take advantage of it. Throughout your college life, you are bound to
write some type of research paper or an essay of some type. With college
writing you can get a jump start on how to do these different types of essays.
It can a valuable learning experience for you in life while you’re in college
and after you graduate.
Finally, I want you to know that
there will be some stressful times. You have some obstacles and challenges
through your first year in college. Most of you are living away from home for
the first time and that can be hard. Go out and meet people, join a program of
some sort, and make new friends. There are plenty of people here on campus that
can help you get through tough times. Stay positive and keep grinding even when
you think you can’t anymore. You will make it if you have an open mind and a positive
attitude and of course if you stay on top of your work! Again, remember to stay
focused and don’t procrastinate and you will be just fine. Best of luck to you
and I hope you have a great experience here at Springfield College!
Sincerely,
Chad Shade
